Shades of red for a striking look - Chassé Theatre Breda

The Chassé Theatre is a large theatre in Breda city centre, right next to the old barracks. The theatre, named after army officer David Hendrik Chassé, is a modern building designed by Herman Hertzberger with a striking corrugated iron roof. The theatre includes three theatre auditoriums, three cinema screens and three restaurants.

Hertzberger's design was based on the sculpture ‘Reclining woman who dreams’. His creed ‘Man is the measure of all things’ becomes clear here. The building features many round and undulating forms, both inside and out. The most prominent element is the undulating roof. Hertzberger was commissioned to add a fly tower to the two biggest auditoriums. But to avoid disfiguring the Breda cityscape with two concrete towers, he decided to cover everything with an undulating roof - a stroke of genius.

Standing 30 metres tall, the Chassé Theatre is the biggest theatre in the Netherlands. The land on which it is built is larger than a football pitch. Its three auditoriums have a capacity of 430, 665 and 212 respectively. There are also three cinema screens with 118, 116 and 68 seats respectively. All the doors to the theatre auditoriums and cinema screens open onto a communal corridor. The architect wanted to create a communal meeting place and promote communication.

The theatre is also accessible outside the cultural programme. The architects M+R developed a flexible work area and catering concept here. The flexible work area CHASSE CONNECT provides a pallet of red furniture and red tretford carpet as a tribute to the theatre. The area has various workplaces which can be used by flex workers. In 2022, tretford carpet was fitted in the cloakroom and the cinema screens of the Chassé Theatre.
