Deiters House - renovating an architectural treasure of the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony in accordance with historic preservation standards

When it was established in the 19th century, the Mathildenhöhe - a part of Darmstadt – put this city at the focus of the European arts. Conceived as a garden for the Grand Duke's Court, the Mathildenhöhe was a synthesis of the arts consisting of a wedding tower, exhibition building, a museum, a sycamore grove and an artists' colony.

The historical significance of Deiters House, as one of Darmstadt's outstanding buildings and cultural monuments, goes back to the first exhibition of the artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe. In 2019/2020, as part of the bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the building was completely renovated in accordance with the special requirements of monument preservation.

Originally conceived as a residence for the managing director of the artists' colony, Wilhelm Deiters, the building was erected in 1901. Unlike so many other buildings, it escaped destruction during WWII. The refurbishment work took into consideration that this historical monument would also serve as office space. Since 2020, Deiters House has accommodated the Mathildenhöhe Institute and the World Heritage Office under the direction of Cultural Advisor, Prof. Dr. Ludger Hünnekens.

tretford INTERLIFE broadloom carpet was installed on the second floor. This product's natural Cashmere goat hair supports a pleasant indoor climate and helps maintain a tranquil atmosphere in the office. Prof. Dr. Hünnekens  suggests that "while looking for an optically and technically suitable carpet for this listed property, we came across tretford Carpet and its sustainability played a decisive role in winning us over."
